Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 13, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Retro 80's collects, uses, stores, and protects information.
1. Overview
Retro 80's is a photo transformation app that turns a photo into an authentic-looking 1980s photograph. We aim to collect only the information needed to operate, improve, and support the app.
By using Retro 80's, you agree to the collection and use of information described in this Privacy Policy.
2. Information We Collect
Retro 80's may collect or process the following categories of information:
- Photos you select or capture for transformation.
- Transformed images created by the app.
- An anonymous account identifier from Firebase Authentication. You do not create an account, enter an email address, or sign in.
- Your free-transform count, credit balance, and purchase records related to in-app purchases.
- App usage events, such as screen views, transform starts and completions, save and share actions, language changes, and errors.
- Device and diagnostic information such as device model, iOS version, app version, and crash reports.
3. Photos and Generated Content
When you choose a photo, Retro 80's downscales it on your device and sends it over an encrypted connection to our server, which forwards it to an AI image provider to perform the transformation. The result is returned to your device. We do not keep a copy of your original photo or the result on our servers: the image only passes through memory while the request is being processed.
Both the original and the result are stored in the local Gallery on your device. You can delete Gallery items from within the app. Photos that you save to the iOS Photos app remain in Photos until you delete them there.
The AI provider processes the photo only to fulfil the request, under its own privacy policy. Retro 80's uses the OpenAI image API, and photos sent through the API are not used to train OpenAI models.
4. How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Provide the photo transformation, before/after comparison, save, and share features.
- Track free transforms, manage credits and purchases, and restore purchases.
- Maintain your local Gallery and app settings such as language.
- Understand app usage and improve features through analytics.
- Detect errors, diagnose crashes, improve reliability, and provide support.
- Prevent abuse of the free tier and of paid credits.
5. Third-Party Services
Retro 80's uses third-party services to operate core app features, including:
- Firebase Authentication for anonymous session management.
- Firebase Cloud Functions and Firestore (hosted in the European Union) for processing transforms and storing credit balances and purchase records.
- Firebase App Check to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app.
- Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics for usage analytics and crash reporting.
- OpenAI for AI image processing.
- Apple In-App Purchase for credit pack purchases.
These services may process information according to their own privacy policies and security practices.
6. Analytics
We use analytics to understand how people use Retro 80's, such as which screens are opened, which features are used, and whether transforms complete successfully. Analytics helps us improve the app experience and diagnose issues.
Analytics and crash reports never include the content of your photos.
7. Advertising and Tracking
Retro 80's does not show ads, does not include advertising SDKs, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. The app does not request the advertising identifier (IDFA) and does not show the App Tracking Transparency prompt.
8. Purchases and Credits
Purchases are processed by Apple. To grant credits, the app sends Apple's signed transaction receipt to our server, which verifies it with Apple and records the transaction identifier, product, and date so a purchase is never credited twice. We do not receive or store your name, payment card details, or Apple ID.
9. Data Retention
Photos are not retained on our servers after a transform completes. Local Gallery items remain on your device until you delete them or remove the app. Your anonymous account, credit balance, and purchase records are kept for as long as needed to provide the service, honour purchases, prevent fraud, and meet legal obligations. Analytics and crash data are retained according to Firebase's retention settings.
Because sign-in is anonymous, your credits are tied to the app installation. Deleting the app deletes the local Gallery and disconnects the anonymous account; remaining credits cannot be recovered on a new install.
10. Your Choices
- You choose which photos to transform; nothing is uploaded until you tap Transform.
- You can delete transformed items from the Gallery inside the app.
- You can manage camera and photo library permissions in iOS Settings.
- You can choose the app language in Settings.
- You can contact support for privacy questions or to request deletion of the server-side records tied to your anonymous account.
11. Children's Privacy
Retro 80's is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children under the age required by applicable law without appropriate consent. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us.
12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information. All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted. AI service API keys are not embedded in the iOS app and are handled only on server-side infrastructure. Credit balances are held and enforced on the server, and Firestore rules give the app read-only access to its own record. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
13. International Users
Our database is hosted in the European Union. The AI image provider and Firebase Analytics may process information in the United States or other countries, depending on the locations of their infrastructure.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
